Italy certificate attestation in the UAE
Italy certificate attestation in the UAE depends on who signed the Italian document. A certificate signed by a municipal or administrative official is legalised by the Prefettura. A notarial deed or court document is legalised by the Procura della Repubblica. After that Italian legalisation, the UAE embassy in Rome stamps the document, and MOFA in the UAE adds the final attestation.

MOFA in the UAE
Choosing the wrong Italian office is the usual first mistake. The second is forgetting translation: Italian documents need a translation MOFA accepts before or after the chain.

Prefettura or Procura: which Italian office
Prefettura (Prefecture).
For documents signed by public administration officials: birth, marriage and residence certificates from the comune, school certificates, and many university documents. You go to the Prefettura of the province where the official who signed works.
Procura della Repubblica.
For documents signed by notaries, court officials and sworn translators. A power of attorney signed before an Italian notaio, or a sworn translation (traduzione giurata), goes here.
Both offices work by province, so a certificate from Milan goes to Milan’s office even if you live in Rome.
Civil status documents
Italian comuni issue certificates and extracts of birth and marriage records. The multilingual extract (estratto plurilingue) has headings in several languages and may be accepted by some offices without a full translation. Ask the UAE office before relying on it. Italian degrees
A laurea certificate or diploma may be legalised at the Prefettura if it is signed by a university official whose signature is on file. Some UAE employers also ask for the certificate of exams (transcript). See degree attestation in Dubai.
Translation from Italian
- Sworn translation in Italy. A translator swears the translation at a court, and the sworn translation is legalised at the Procura, then goes to the UAE embassy with the original.
- Legal translation in the UAE. A legal translator here translates into Arabic after MOFA, if the receiving office accepts it. See legalized translation in Dubai.
Italy embassy document attestation fees
People search for the Italy embassy document attestation fee. On the Italian side, the Prefettura and Procura may require a revenue stamp (marca da bollo), and the UAE embassy in Rome charges its own fee; both are set by those offices and we pass them on at cost. If you are living in the UAE
The Italian legalisation and the UAE embassy step happen in Italy. A relative, an Italian agency or your own trip can cover them. The Italian embassy and consulate in the UAE serve Italian citizens, but they do not add the UAE embassy stamp.

Frequently asked questions
Prefettura or Procura, how do I know?
Look at who signed the document. A public official from a comune, school or university: the Prefettura. A notary, court official or sworn translator: the Procura.
My Italian certificate has an apostille. Will MOFA accept it?
No. The UAE is outside the apostille system. For Italy certificate attestation in the UAE, ask for legalisation and then the UAE embassy stamp in Rome.
Can I use the Italian consulate in Dubai?
Not for the UAE embassy step. The consulate serves Italian citizens; the UAE embassy step is done in Italy.
Do I need a translation for MOFA?
Yes, for a document in Italian. Arrange a sworn translation in Italy or a legal translation in the UAE.
