Italy certificate attestation in UAE and notary services for Italians
Italy certificate attestation in UAE depends on who signed the Italian document: a public official, or a notary or court. But many Italians living here first meet a notary for the opposite reason. A notaio in Italy needs a procura (power of attorney) for an inheritance or a property sale. A comune wants a signed declaration. A bank wants certified copies of your passport. Those papers are signed before a notary public in the UAE.

The notary public checks your identity, watches you sign and applies the seal. You can sign in person, by video through our online notary public services using the UAE remote notarisation channels such as the Ministry of Justice e-Notary system and UAE PASS, or at home with our home visit notary service. We tell you if your document can be done online.

The text.
Ask the notaio in Italy to send the draft. We check your name, date and place of birth and codice fiscale against your documents.

If the notary here needs English or Arabic, we prepare a legal translation to sit alongside the Italian text.

Ask the notaio whether the procura needs MOFA and the Italian embassy or consulate in the UAE on top of the notary.

For an Italian document going to a UAE office, look at who signed it.

Both offices work by province, so a certificate from Milan goes to Milan’s office even if you live in Rome. After the Italian legalisation, the UAE embassy in Rome stamps the document and MOFA in the UAE attests it.
Civil status documents
Italian comuni issue certificates and extracts of birth and marriage records. The multilingual extract (estratto plurilingue) has headings in several languages and may be accepted by some offices without a full translation. Ask the UAE office before relying on it. Italian degrees
A laurea certificate or diploma may be legalised at the Prefettura if it is signed by a university official whose signature is on file. Some UAE employers also ask for the certificate of exams. See degree attestation.

Frequently asked questions
Can I sign a procura for an inheritance in Italy from the UAE?
Yes. Ask the notaio for the draft, and you sign it before our notary public here. Check whether the notaio also wants MOFA and the Italian embassy or consulate in the UAE.
Prefettura or Procura, how do I know?
Look at who signed the document. A public official from a comune, school or university: the Prefettura. A notary, court official or sworn translator: the Procura.
My Italian certificate has an apostille. Will MOFA accept it?
No. The UAE is not a party to the Apostille Convention. Ask for legalisation and then the UAE embassy stamp in Rome.
Do I need a translation for MOFA?
Yes, for a document in Italian. Use a sworn translation in Italy or a legal translation in the UAE, whichever the receiving office accepts.
